As we approach the end of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, we toast all the amazing athletes from around the world! The hard work and determination to get such a prestigious level is something we can all raise a glass to...no matter who you're rooting for.
At the Bubble Bar, not only do we salute the athletes competing in this multi-sport, athletic competition where the world comes to compete, feel inspired, and be together, we also look back and celebrate the Olympics of 1952, in Helsinki, Finland.
Why the 1952 Olympics?
In the summer games of 1952, my mother, Gail Peters Roper, was an Olympic competitor in the breaststroke swimming event. She didn't medal at the games due to an injury, but a year later in 1953, she was ranked as the No. 1 women’s breaststroker. She didn't return for the 1956 Olympics because other swimmers said it would be “selfish” for her to do so (that's so 1950's when women were expected to only be homemakers). We can only image what she would have accomplished if she had returned.
Never Stop Swimming
While opinions at the time kept her from the highest level of competition, they couldn’t stop her from swimming, a consistency she has kept in her daily routine to this day (she recently celebrated her 95th birthday). Her dedication and achievements continue to inspire me and so many others, both near and far.
So, if you happen to be at the Bubble Bar and spot her (she frequently stops by in the afternoon), please say hello. The only thing Mom loves more than swimming and her family, is talking with locals and tourists alike about the adventures she's had traveling around the world for the sport she loves. She might even show you her tattoo of the Olympic rings on her ankle.
Toast Around the World
The 2024 Summer Olympic Games wrap up with the closing ceremonies on Sunday, August 11, and we hope you have a chance to stop by the Bubble Bar and celebrate the incredible job Paris has done hosting the world with French Champagne. Or toast the global athletes with a bottle of bubbles from one of your favorite countries to watch - we have sparkling wines from the US, England, Germany, Austria, South Africa, and New Zealand; Cava from Spain; and Prosecco from Italy. It's a good excuse to try something new!
Cheers -
Sarah
